Alaska Airlines change and cancellation policy (2026)

Main and First Class vs Saver

Alaska keeps its rules simpler than most U.S. airlines, but the dividing line is sharp. Main Cabin and First Class fares can be changed with no change fee, and if the new flights cost more you pay the difference. If they cost less, Alaska's change screen shows the credit due before you check out.

Saver is a different product. It is Alaska's lowest fare and shows as fare class X on your confirmation. Seats are assigned at check-in, Saver passengers board last in group F, and Alaska says it cannot promise that two or more people on Saver will sit together. A Saver ticket can't be combined with other fare types on the same itinerary and can't be transferred. Most important for this page: apart from a paid same-day change, a Saver ticket can't be changed at all.

Alaska's 24-hour rule is wider than the federal one

Within 24 hours of buying, you can cancel any Alaska ticket for a full refund to the original payment, or change it once without a change fee. You still pay any fare increase and new taxes. Alaska says refunds can take up to seven business days.

The DOT rule only protects tickets bought at least seven days before departure. Alaska's own policy covers any ticket for travel that starts more than 24 hours after you buy it, so a fare booked three days out still gets the full 24 hours. Tickets bought within 24 hours of departure fall under the standard rules the moment they are issued.

For a Saver fare this window matters most. It is the only time a Saver ticket can be cancelled for its full value.

Cancelling a Saver fare: the 14-day line

For Saver tickets bought on or after July 19, 2023, Alaska gives a credit worth 50% of the ticket value if you cancel at least 14 days before the first flight on the ticket. Cancel with fewer than 14 days to go and Alaska's terms leave no refund, no change and no credit, except a same-day confirmed change on the day itself.

Example: a $180 Saver round trip cancelled 20 days before departure leaves about $90 in credit. The same ticket cancelled 10 days out leaves nothing. If there is a real chance your plans move, the gap between Saver and Main is often cheaper than losing half or all of the fare.

Same-day confirmed changes and free standby

Alaska lets you switch to another flight on the same calendar day during the check-in window, in online check-in, in the app or with an airport agent. The price is per change: $50 for nonstop flights between Seattle and Portland or nonstop flights within one state, and $75 for everything else. Saver tickets pay $40 more. No fare difference is charged.

To qualify, the ticket number must start with 027 (issued by Alaska or Hawaiian), the flights must be operated by Alaska, Hawaiian, Horizon or SkyWest for Alaska, the whole itinerary must be within North America, and you must keep the same origin, destination and connection cities and ask before the original flight leaves.

The fee is waived on refundable First (J) and Coach (Y) fares, and on other Main and First fares for Atmos Gold, Platinum and Titanium members, primary Atmos Rewards Summit Visa Infinite cardholders, certain American AAdvantage elites, and companions on the same reservation. Free standby is limited: refundable J and Y fares, Gold and above, Silver on Hawaii neighbor-island flights, a few nonstop shuttles (Anchorage–Fairbanks, Seattle–Portland and Seattle–Spokane) and Atmos for Business travelers. Saver passengers can't stand by at all, whatever their status.

The no-show rule

If you won't make a flight, cancel or change it before it departs. When you don't, Alaska applies its no-show policy to the whole reservation. It cancels the missed flight and every continuing and return flight, and the money or Atmos Rewards points spent on a non-refundable fare can't be used as credit later. Missing the outbound flight of a round trip without telling Alaska costs you the return too.

Credit certificates: expiry and where you can use them

When you cancel a non-refundable Main or First fare, the remaining value can come back as a credit certificate, emailed with a code and PIN. It is valid for 12 months from the issue date of the original ticket, or 30 days from the cancellation, whichever is later. You must buy the new ticket before that date, but the trip itself can be up to 11 months later.

Two limits catch people out. Alaska says certificates can be redeemed only on alaskaair.com, not through a travel agency or any other channel. They also pay only fare and government taxes, not change fees, service charges or checked bags. You can combine up to six on one reservation, and award, non-revenue and industry tickets don't earn certificates.

When you can't change online

Alaska's manage-reservation tool handles most changes, but not every booking. Alaska lists these as needing an agent: a ticket not bought directly from Alaska or Hawaiian, anyone in the party already checked in, Saver or government fares, more than seven travelers or a group booking, more than eight flight segments, and some special requests such as traveling with a pet. Group bookings go through Alaska's groups desk.

Your refund rights if Alaska cancels or changes your flight

Whatever the airline's own policy says, U.S. Department of Transportation rules give you a refund, not just a credit, when the airline cancels your flight or makes a significant change and you choose not to travel. A significant change includes departing 3 or more hours earlier or arriving 3 or more hours later on a domestic trip (6 hours internationally), a different origin or destination airport, more connections, or a downgrade to a lower class.

If you bought directly from the airline, the refund is automatic once you decline the rebooking or credit: within 7 business days for card purchases and 20 business days for cash.

The DOT 24-hour rule applies to tickets bought at least seven days before departure: the airline must either let you cancel for a full refund within 24 hours or let you hold the fare for 24 hours without paying.

Bought your ticket from a travel agency or website?

Alaska's own instructions for tickets booked through Expedia, another travel agency or another airline are to contact that seller directly to change or cancel. Alaska credit certificates also can't be redeemed through a travel agency, Fos Travel Deals included, so use them on alaskaair.com.
